Blue Acoustic, Andrew Hardin - 2005. Songlist: Sonatina #1, Montezuma, Seminole, Sedona Sonatina#2, Thunderbird, El Cajon, Bajo #1, Variaciones Cortas #1, Sonatina #3, Puerto Penasco, Tarantula Train, Rio Blanco, Bajo #2, Variaciones Cortas #2, Sonatino #4, Mexacali Chinatown.
The journey begins on a porch overlooking the Blanco River in the Texas Hill Country, where Andrew conspires with neighbor Ray Wylie Hubbard, who jumpstarts the proceedings the same way he always does any time he takes hold of a guitar - with a few soulful, swaggering blues licks. The arrangements are spare and all of the emphasis is on the playing and technique of these guitarists, including collaborations with Eliza Gilkyson, Dave Alvin, Tom Russell, Don Edwards and Washtub Jerry.
Just Like
This Train, Andrew
Hardin - 2002. Songlist: Last
Train From Poor Valley, Stay Away From Lonely Places,
In Caso Di Nebbia, Just Like This Train, Athabasca, Who's
Going to Help Brother Get Further, Red Onions, Corn Pickin',
Me Japanese Boy I Love You, South of The Border (Down
Mexico Way), Most of All, Blue Hawaiian Moonlight.
No, you're not
seeing things, this is one of Andy's new discs. He's been selling this on the
road here and there but now has pressed enough to go worldwide with it. And
the world is now a better place for it. On his third disc he finally steps
up to the mic for some vocals. It's mostly instumental, and you know what
that means. Lots of incredible licks on the guitar. It's a mix of acoustic
and electric songs. He's flavored it with some new originals and well chosen
covers by Bacharach, Allen Toussaint, Joni Mitchell (title track), Willie
Nelson and even James Burton. Twelve tracks in all. Fats Kaplin gets in on
the action and lends a hand on a few cuts also. I always like to throw Andy's
disc in the multidisc changer with a few of Tom's discs and hit random. Try
it, you'll love it.

The presence of Albert Lee on "Coney Island Moon" will raise the eyebrows of all you country folk, but Hardin himself proves more than a match for his illustrious guest as he blazes through this uplifting album of instrumentals with his own breathtaking technique. Seamless pentatonic runs, nifty banjo rolls and flawless tremelo-picking are all delivered with a tasteful sense of melody and precision that'll have you quaking in your cowboy boots. Add some blues, Hawaiian and even jazz and you have a varied as wel as inspired guitar feast.

This is Tom’s first foray into the DVD field. And like everything else he does he does it with style. The basis of the set is last year’s train ride across Canada with some very special musical guests. You get some live performances (sixteen to be exact) of Tom and Andy from Vancouver and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Other performers include the Hot Club Of Cowtown, Kristi Rose and Fats Kaplin. For interviews you’ll get to hear from Dave Alvin, Eliza Gilkyson and of course Tom and Andy. Lots of music from Tom including five previously unreleased songs. Extras include a photo gallery as well as a 5.1 surround sound option. The highlights are too numerous to mention on a set like this. This is one music DVD that you’ll find yourself watching more than just a few times. This is like being at the concert, backstage and then hopping on the train with them as they head to the next stop. All aboard for this one.

The songs of Tom Russell chart the lives of outsiders and people living at the margins, and on his newest album LOVE & FEAR he intertwines their stories and his own in a chronicle of dreams and dreams deferred; passion and desperation; sin and redemption. Andrew Hardin adds his guitar mastery to the mix as well.

Tom Russell is one of the seminal artists of the Americana movement, crafting finely honed character studies that champion blue collar life and singing with a voice as honest and unforgiving as the West Texas plains. These recordings from the five Philo albums (plus three previously unreleased tracks) find Russell and Andrew Hardin at their best.
